People with high IQ's are sometimes good
language learners if they are interested in learning and using the language if they are
willing to try the language without the fear of being judged and have some amount
of confidence. They would be great learners if they learned the following
strategies: predicting,
paying attention to important items, preparing (thinking about what one wants
to communicate in advance), being willing to look foolish in order to complete
the task, practicing, monitoring or trying to correct one’s own speech for
accuracy. They would also learn better if they asked questions, took notes,
related new information to a visualization, and asked multiple resources and
different people, and related new information to a physical action. Smart
learners would play or experiment with the
language.
Even students with high IQ need training to be better language learners. They need feedback on their work and need to understand that language learning is an individualized process. In addition, they should be guided to use a variety of methods and studying techniques in order to successfully acquire a foreign language.
Teachers could help all students and especially smart students that they play a definite role in their self-improvement via studying, practicing and reflecting. They could read extensively, add supplementary material, study subjects in English that promote their understanding and enhance their languages.
